If Jesus is Lord: Week 1

Scripture Passages

Isaiah 9:5-7

Every warrior’s boot used in battle

    and every garment rolled in blood

will be destined for burning,

    will be fuel for the fire.

For to us a child is born,

    to us a son is given,

    and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace

    there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne

    and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it

    with justice and righteousness

    from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty

    will accomplish this.

Isaiah 11:1-9

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;

    from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—

    the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,

    the Spirit of counsel and of might,

    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—

and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,

    or decide by what he hears with his ears;

but with righteousness he will judge the needy,

    with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.

He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;

    with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.

Righteousness will be his belt

    and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb,

    the leopard will lie down with the goat,

the calf and the lion and the yearling[a] together;

    and a little child will lead them.

The cow will feed with the bear,

    their young will lie down together,

    and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

The infant will play near the cobra’s den,

    and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy

    on all my holy mountain,

for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord

    as the waters cover the sea.

Mark 1:15

"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"

Reflect on the Verses

Take a moment to read through the passage slowly. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you through it.

Is there a word or phrase that God is drawing to your attention? What is He saying to you through these texts?

Engage with the Message

  • What stood out to you from the Scripture passage and/or this week's message?

  • In what ways is God challenging you and/or encouraging you through the message?

  • What are your thoughts on the New Testament's teachings on nonviolence?

  • In what ways did Jesus challenge the Jewish peoples' understanding of the Messiah?

  • Why do you think that Christianity has so often been used to justify violence? What is the impact of this on how Christianity is understood within our world?

  • What opportunity does the Church have to show our world who Jesus really is in our current culture? In what ways is the gospel "good news" in our world?

  • What preconceived ideas do you have about who Jesus is supposed to be? Is there anything you might be missing in your faith because of these preconceived ideas? How might God want to shift your thinking in this area?
